Musikverein , Vienna (since 1870)

During the 18th and 19th centuries, “the Gewandhaus subscription concerts would frequently contain an overture, an opera aria, an instrument solo, and a chorale finale in each half, and might last for three or four hours in total. Where vocal music had been at the centre of the 18th-century programmes, during the 19th century it became more accepted to perform movements from concerts and symphonies, although concerts solely of instrument music were still rare.
By the end of the 19th century, concert activity had divided into solo recitals, chamber music performances, and orchestral performances.

Free concerts for wider audiences
Crystal Palace Bowl , London
* under Sousa in the 1880s, the Marine Corps Band would give free weekly concerts at the White House and the Capitol in Washington
