It is the only clarinet concerto by Mozart. It was also his last concerto; he died 2 months later. Mozart made his final public appearance conducting the Viennese premiere of this concerto.

Mozart first met Anton Stadler (a virtuoso of the newly invented clarinet) in 1783 and formed a friendship that inspired the Kegelstatt Trio, the Clarinet Quintet, and this concerto.
