Painting #061 - William Blake

William Blake (1757–1827, English Romantic)

- William Blake
- originally a book frontispiece to
"Europe, a Prophecy" (23.3 x 16.8 cm) 1794
- British Museum (London)
It shows Urizen (the embodiment of conventional reason and law) crouching in a circular design with a cloud-like background. His outstretched hand holds a compass over the darker void below.

Issac Newton
- William Blake
- oil on canvas (460 x 600 cm) 1795
- Collection Tate (London)
Isaac Newton is shown sitting naked and crouched on a rocky outcropping covered with algae, apparently at the bottom of the sea. His attention is focused upon diagrams he draws with a compass, which is smaller than that held by Urizen in Blake's The Ancient of Days.

Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age.
