Music #35 - New Orleans Jazz (4)

New Orleans Jazz
1910-1940

“The first black jazz bands were large marching groups that were often called upon to play for funeral processions or Mardi Gras celebrations.
Later, smaller groups were formed to play in the bars and whorehouse of the notorious Storyville district (1897-1917), and it is from them that the Dixieland ensemble took shape.”

Leading Dixieland soloists:-

Sidney Bechet
Blue Horizon  - oboe solo

Louis Armstrong – the trumpeter and scat singer
I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues - Frank Sinatra

Bix Beiderbecke

Feel the Chicago style?
Musicians were moving from Storyville to Chicago.
