Painting #042 - Bernini

Gian Lorenzo Bernini

(Naples 1598 – Rome 1680)
- credited with creating the Baroque style of sculpture

Bernini created the piazza leading to St Peter's. The two massive semi-circular colonnades (柱廊) formed a spectacular oval-shaped arena within which gathering visitors could witness the appearance of the pope.
The creation extended the symbolic greatness of the Vatican area.

Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers)
Designed in 1651 by Bernini
Piazza Navona, Rome
From the fountain base, travertine rocks rise to support an ancient Egyptian obelisk and four river gods. The river gods represent four major rivers of the four continents through which papal authority had spread: the Nile (Africa), the Danube (Europe), the Ganges (Asia), and the Río de la Plata (America).
