Music #34 - New Orleans Jazz (3)

New Orleans Jazz
1910-1940

“The first black jazz bands were large marching groups that were often called upon to play for funeral processions or Mardi Gras celebrations.
Later, smaller groups were formed to play in the bars and whorehouse of the notorious Storyville district (1897-1917), and it is from them that the Dixieland ensemble took shape.”

Joe “King” Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band
Snag It - note the wah-wah mute on the trumpet, and the toilet plunger mute on the trombone ^_^

Some Jazz superstars were nicknamed ‘King’, ‘Duke’, etc.
Louisiana Creole people refers to those who are descended from the colonial settlers in Louisiana, especially those of French and Spanish descent.

Louis ‘Satchmo’ Armstrong
West End Blues
Somebody Stole My Gal

His nickname Satchmo or Satch is short for "Satchel-mouth" / "書包-口" (describing his embouchure/運唇法).

Jelly Roll Morton with his Red Hot Peppers band
Dead Man Blues
Cf Dead Man Blues on Shamisen
(Japanese 3-string banjo 三味線)

* Jelly Roll Morton was the piano challenger in ‘the Legend of 1900’ movie.
* It is said that 'Jelly Roll' had a naughty macho meaning.
