- Every Manchurian (with his family) belongs to one of the eight flags (armies). Each army has its own color for the pennant/flag and uniform: its body has 1 of the 4 colors (yellow/white/blue/red), and its rim has the same color as the body or red (or white).
- 开始只设“黄红蓝白”四旗，后又增设四旗，周围嵌上其它颜色，称为镶黄、镶红、镶蓝、镶白，与原本的纯色的正四旗合称为八旗。
