Painting #008 - Ancient India

Circa 580 AD
Ajanta Caves

The Ajanta Caves were abandoned when Hinduism replaced Buddhism in India. They were rediscovered by a British officer in 1819.

The caves are numbered 1 to 28 according to their place along the path, beginning at the entrance.

Several are unfinished and some barely begun and others are small shrines.
