Painting #B03 - Carlos II

Carlos II / King Charles II of Spain
- Juan Carreno de Miranda (1614-1685, Spanish)
- oil on canvas (201 x 141 cm) in 1675
- Museo del Prado (Madrid)

Descended from four generations of line-breeding and a 56-year-old father, King Charles II (1661-1665-1700) was mentally retarded, physically weak, and ugly-looking.

The last Habsburg ruler of Spain, Carlos II died young at 39, childless and heirless, though married twice.

The other European powers viewed the nominated successor disturbing the balance of power in Europe; they started the War of the Spanish Succession (1702-1715).
